Zyzzyva 2.0.0 prerelease
I've created some Zyzzyva 2.0.0 prerelease builds. This is the same release I was previously calling 1.1.0, but I think this version has major enough changes to warrant a major revision bump. These builds should be ready to go, and if everything looks fine, they will be used for the final release. Would you mind downloading one of these releases and testing it out?

You'll probably want to back up your Zyzzyva data directory just in case. You know, download these at your own risk, this software is provided "as is", yadda yadda. But I don't expect these release candidates to behave badly at all.

I've done a good amount of testing on my own, but in particular I'd like to make sure:
- All the installers work as expected
- You can load and unload combinations of lexicons without restarting Zyzzyva
- You can build and rebuild lexicon databases
- Lexicon symbols show up as expected
- Quizzes and searches still work as expected
- Nothing crashes!

I would greatly appreciate it if you could download one of these prerelease builds, play with it for a little bit, and let me know if you experience any problems. I hope to get this thing out the door by Thursday night, or Friday at the latest. Thank you so much! Without further ado, the downloads:

pshaw! separate Intel and PPC images? You need a Universal Binary!

Nah, no reason to make two independent 25MB downloads into a single one that's twice as big. :-)

Downloaded it and started playing with it this morning. I've already found some problem where it isn't advancing the cardbox questions...get with me when you get this and I'll describe it in more detail.

K, I think I figured out what's making it wig out. Every time I access the "Cardbox" tab, and then go back to quizzing, it seems to be unable to change the cardbox. Either there is some lock still left on the database file, or something, I'm not sure (no, I haven't been poking in the code at all). Even if I close out the tab, the problem persists. I have to close down Zyzzyva and restart it before I can cardbox quiz correctly again. Any ideas what's goin on?

Dang it... yeah, I've seen this before when I was doing more complicated things with the database, but hadn't reproduced it since I pared down the functionality on the Cardbox form, so I hoped it was gone for good. Thank you for catching this and letting me know it's still happening! I'll reimplement the way the Cardbox form accesses the database, and see if that fixes the problem. I'll post a reply here when the fix is made.

Still has the error where if you make an incorrect hook guess on a word with no hooks, it marks it correct in the database, eh?

Yep, sorry, I'll get around to that one.

I got around to it! I'm creating installers right now with fixes for the problems you've mentioned. I'll upload them and post here as soon as they're done.

Okay, the Windows installer is updated, though the other platforms are not yet.

this is probably just my inability to do something right the first time around... i installed, and created the databases, telling it to load owl+lwl, csw, and volost. it created the databases. i then went to search, and had no lexicons in my pulldown. so, i went to preferences, and set it to load owl+lwl, and now it's creating the databases (again). not sure why.

Hmm, that's very weird. Did you have the search tab open before you configured Zyzzyva to load the three lexicons, or did you configure the lexicons in the window that appears immediately when Zyzzyva starts?

Please let me know if the database creation succeeds the second time, and you're able to perform a search.

ooh. i didn't restart after it created the first time, and still didn't want to load until after i'd restarted the second time. apparently the restart was key.

That's still pretty strange, though I'm glad a restart seems to have fixed it. Zyzzyva is supposed to be able to use newly-loaded lexicons and newly-created databases as soon as you tell it to load/create them. I'll take a look and see if I can figure out why this might have happened... thanks for reporting this!

Thanks for the help so far! This is very helpful. I haven't figured out the weird lexicon database problem [info]kismet09 mentioned, but I think I've fixed everything [info]redaragorn posted about. I've now updated the installers for all platforms. Keep the feedback coming!

I am using it and it works fine for all of the normal and not very complicated things I use the tool for on a daily basis. The only extra feature that I would find very useful is the ability to sort the lists once they have been created. Ideally, one would be able to click one the tabs at the top of the list (i.e., "?", "P", "Word") and then list would then sort based on that category. Maybe something for a later release, but just thought I would give my two cents.

Thanks! I'm definitely planning on that feature, and sooner rather than later. That was something I really wanted to get into this release, but I finally realized that I had to start cutting features or else I would never release anything. :-) Soon, though, soon.

Oh and on another more asthetic note, I don't like that the +/- buttons are on the right hand sign of the search screen. If they were on the left, everything that you would need to do in relation to creating a multi-layered search would be in one place. Going back in forth adds whole seconds(!) to my ability to find obscure words.

Okay, I'm positive. I've made the change in the code, and it will be reflected in the final 2.0.0 release. Thanks for the suggestion!

Ooh, I like this idea. I put them over there because I saw something like that in... iTunes, I think. Or Firefox or something. But I agree, putting them on the left would make it much quicker when mousing and clicking around to create a multi-condition search. Getting out of the user's way is a good thing! I'm not positive, but I think I may just make this change for the final release.
