Oh-fer 7s and 8s
One nice thing about keeping quiz data in a database is that I can easily see which words are giving me the most trouble. Here are my "oh-fer" 7s and 8s... alphagrams for which I have never gotten the correct answer(s) during a Zyzzyva quiz. Maybe after posting them here, the shame of missing them will become so great that I'll always get them right.

7s on which I am 0-for-10 or worse:
1. ACDEELR
2. ADEEHRS
3. ADEEPRS
4. BEORSTU
5. CDEORTU
6. DEMNORU
7. EMORSTU

8s on which I am 0-for-7 or worse:
1. AACEILNT
2. AACEILRT
3. AADEIMNT
4. ABDEIIRT
5. ACDEIIRT
6. ADEILLOR
7. AEGIMNST
8. AEIIMRST
9. AEINNRTT
10. EEGINORR

7s:
1. CLEARED, CREEDAL, DECLARE, RELACED (always miss CREEDAL)
2. ADHERES, HEADERS, HEARSED, SHEARED (miss ADHERES every time)
3. RESPADE, SPEARED (what kind of word is RESPADE??)
4. OBTUSER (but whenever [info]redaragorn mentions this one to me, I get it right away)
5. COURTED, EDUCTOR
6. MOURNED (hmm, I notice a xOURxED theme going on here)
7. OESTRUM

8s:
1. ANALCITE, LAITANCE (huh huh Beavis, he said ANALCITE)
2. TAILRACE
3. ANIMATED, DIAMANTE
4. DIATRIBE
5. RATICIDE (this one is so hard, even [info]crosstables had to think about it for a while)
6. ARILLODE
7. MANGIEST, MINTAGES, MISAGENT, STEAMING (I have no excuse for this one)
8. AIRTIMES, SERIATIM (the tough one is SERIATIM of course... doesn't take an S by the way)
9. INTRANET (attack of the Ns, Rs, and Ts!)
10. ERIGERON

INTRANET is part of a similar family with RETIRANT and INERRANT, which may help it stick.

It sort of helps me to finish a session by making a standard quiz out of all the errors and immediately passing over them again and again, iteratively, until I've got everything right at least once. It just helps get over that "I didn't know this last time, and gosh, I still don't know it now!" feeling that sometimes creeps in.

That's a great idea. I used to do that a lot when I was doing standard quizzes all the time, but never thought of doing it for a cardbox quiz. I think I'll start doing that!

And thanks for noting the relationship between INTRANET, RETIRANT, and INERRANT too. I have a hard time with all three of those for obvious reasons, but I think remembering them together will help a lot.

The way I always remember ERIGERON is that a couple of weeks after I'd started playing at the Lexington club, I saw Jamie Ryan play it. I asked him how on earth one would ever find it, and he told me that he always sees REIGNORE first, and once he sees that it's time to play ERIGERON.

I always miss TAILRACE.

Thanks for the REIGNORE* tip. Now I'll just try to remember not to REIGNORE* the ERIGERON. I'll sometimes use phonies to guide me to real words, and it really helps, as long as you can remember that the phony is phony. When doing that, I'll usually try to throw a negation right before the phony in my mnemonic sentence. My favorite is that it doesn't take a GENIOUS* to see IGNEOUS.

Re: AEINNRTT, my new version of the anamonic runs:

INTREAT: grandma's a cop

Not the best fit with the stem, but easy to memorize and not mess up. Pretty useful too: besides the aforementioned N and R, the O and P are pretty good ones.

Is this data automatically saved by Zyzzyva? Is there a cardbox list that's accessible to look at? I'd like to see what my oh-fers are as well. Or do you compile this information yourself?

It is automatically saved by Zyzzyva, but unfortunately there's not a good way to view it from within the program. If you have an SQLite client, you can directly view the database using it, but otherwise the data are inaccessible. Sorry! Now that the cardbox system is actually out there, getting better visibility into its data is high on the priority list.
